Hello,
Anyone willing to share a good dispersed camping location near Reno. Looking for a moderate trail and a camping spot where we could do some target practice.

Thank you

The target practice is the tricky part in Washoe County. They've been clamping down on where you can shoot because of unsafe shooters, fire hazard spring to fall, and the trash shooters seem to leave after each outing. The rule is you can’t shoot within 1 mile / 1760 yards of any structure, and Washoe County has maps showing no shooting areas. There aren’t many areas where you can shoot close to Reno, but the further you drive from Reno, the better it gets. The places you can shoot fill up fast given our Ammo Apocalypse 2.0 conditions in 2020 / 2021.

Mike has some great videos focusing on Nevada Overlanding, and this was one of the first routes we tried.

Old Cuomo Road

It’s near Dayton, and there are posted signs about shooting here that basically say “don’t be an idiot, clean up after yourself, and have fun”. The trail heads up above the snow line, and we chose to turn back on our first attempt in February 2020 due to snow and mud. Our next attempt was in May (clear, dry road), and seeing the mining / ghost town sites was a lot of fun. Plenty of places to camp, and our 2007 Ford Explorer pre-leveling kit and 30” tires had no issues. It‘s a bumpy / rocky road and airing down helps with the bumps, but we saw many two wheel drive vehicles on the road. Oddly enough, our avatar pic is from our May trip on this route.

Even with the recent snow, you can still run the trail to the snow line, having fun in the mud. The snow line is a few miles in on the trail, and there are places you can shoot / camp. Just may not be able to make it to Ft. Churchill.

Como Area is a good suggestion. Sunrise Pass area is also good south of Carson. Hunter Lake Road area is good when it isn't dry. If you're willing to drive an hour then the options are endless.
