Some basic yet useful informations about overlanding in Spain. I hope it will help you prepare your trip :relaxed:

Vehicle traffic must respect both the natural environment and the property and rights of landowners, the rights of pedestrians and non-motorized users, and must not cause unnecessary danger, harm or inconvenience to people and the natural ecosystem.

In accordance with general traffic legislation, vehicles and trailers must be registered in a clearly identifiable and regulatory manner.

Prohibition to travel through fields and off the tracks and paths (specific to Catalonia: the authorised tracks must be paved or have a width equal to or greater than 4 metres). It is forbidden to use fire roads, forest roads for wood extraction, and all kinds of streams and rivers, even if they have dried up.

  • Signage :
The municipalities and competent authorities must clearly communicate the traffic bans issued. Roads and tracks that are subject to traffic restrictions or bans must be properly marked at the beginning, end and, if necessary, at intermediate access points.

  • Maximum speed :
The maximum speed of traffic on the tracks is thirty kilometers per hour.

  • « Motorized group traffic" :
-1. « Motorized group traffic" means the circulation of several vehicles which, by mutual agreement and without competitive purpose, follow the same route.
-2. « Motorized traffic in organized groups" means traffic that is promoted, without competitive purpose, by a company or individual who is responsible for the group.

Group circulation in protected areas is prohibited if there are more than seven motorcycles or more than four vehicles in Catalonia, three vehicles in Andorra, five vehicles in Aragon and two vehicles in the Bardenas. Each vehicle must be spaced 150 metres apart.

When the group is a little larger in "unorganized" form, it is possible to separate and space the departures by thirty minutes. (Beware of groups during picnics.)

For organized groups, it is necessary to request a permit to travel to each of the provinces crossed (allow a minimum of one month to obtain the answer).

This request is made by mail and must stipulate:
o Dates and duration of the stay.
o Names of participants and vehicle registration.
o Details of the planned itinerary.
Each of the vehicles participating in the hike must be provided with a copy (photocopy) of the authorisation issued by the Spanish authorities.

  • Limitations and prohibitions :

It is forbidden to travel in groups organized for nocturnal events. This means from sunset to one hour after sunrise. Excluding access roads to rural communities or dwellings.

Wilderness camping is generally prohibited.

Fire is strictly prohibited outside the areas equipped for this purpose.

  • What you need if controlled

- 2 triangles (1 to put in front of the vehicle, and 1 to put in the rear in case of breakdown)

- 1 reflective safety jacket per person in the vehicle. Those vests must be located in the passenger compartment and not in the trunk of the vehicle.

- 2 shims to immobilize the vehicle

- 1 box of spare bulbs (original of the vehicle brand).

If this equipment is missing: a minimum fine of 90 euros to be paid immediately for all foreigners, under penalty of immobilisation of the vehicle.

  • Specific to the Bardenas Reales :

*Traffic allowed from 08:00 in the morning until one hour before sunset.

*Speed of 30km/h maximum on tracks and vehicles in groups of 3 maximum.

*The authorized trails are accessible without problems to all vehicles.

*The other tracks must be authorised by the Junta Bardenas

*Bivouac prohibited. (It is possible to spend the night in the desert, with a permit from the Junta Bardenas)
