I just got a tab A 10.1 cell tablet from my work for free. Looking for navigation software that will still work good on Android 4.1.2? Any recommendations?

I have Gaia running on Android 4.1.2. After some feedback from the Gaia folks, 4.1.2 is about as old an operating system as they support but it does work. It occasionally has a moment when it freaks out but a quick restart of the app fixes it. That would be my suggestion. I also use Garmin Earthmate because I have an InReach SE but lots more options in Gaia.

I have the older InReach (before Garmin bought Delorme), do you know if Earthmate will work with it?

My InReachSE is pre-Garmin also. The Earthmate app is the Earthmate app, it either works on 4.1.2 or not. So if it works on mine it should work on yours.

I say all of this with the caveat that it could stop working with the next app updates as 4.1.2 is very old in the android world and will probably not be supported much longer. My phone is at android 8.1.0 for reference.

Enjoy it while it lasts!

I have an old Tab 4 that is running Android 5.1.1. I run BackCountry Navigator on it and it works well. I'm unsure if BackCountry Navigator will run on Android 4.1.2 but here is a link to their help desk. https://crittermap.zendesk.com/hc/en-us.

BN is an excellent app and there is a free version you can try. I really like the $15 MVUM add on. It layers the MVUM trails onto whichever map layer you are using.

Good luck!
