I was a bit concerned about that, however after 10s of thousands of miles and a thousand or more miles of off pavement trips it hasn't been a problem at all. Those old steel cans are pretty sturdy. You could beat on one all day with a ball-peen hammer and dent it a bit, but not rip it open. Thanks for the really good question... I've since done away with the slipper springs and installed longer double eyelet leafs with shackles. Next I'll be beefing up the sub-frame a bit with some square tubing.
