Ham/GMRS Callsign
KO6BI
That depends on where you go and who with. CB really hasn't evolved much since the 70's. In a group where you want to communicate, most people run CB because its easy and cheap. I run ham radio because its better over all for communication in groups. I have on the other hand been looking at the SAT communicators. I was looking into a SAT phone but the newer systems (cant recall name's) allow limited texting and gps location. I do some traveling by myself in remote areas. The only way I would get help would be with one of those. With CB and ham you would be lucky if someone was close enough to hear you and that is only if they happened to be on the same frequency.

When I take a group of people out, I require a working radio in every vehicle. Over the years I have helped a handful of people who got separated from their group and had no way to contact them. Would not have been an issue if they had a radio.

For vehicle to vehicle comms GMRS is another good alternative to CB, it does also have a license but it is pay to play (no test) and covers your immediate family for 10 years.
But it all depends who you are with and what they use. Your probably won't come across a random person on the trail using GMRS, unfortunately the offroad industry is slow to accept GMRS as a valid tool.
I prefer ham radio but it's not as plug and play as most people want their comms to be.
