We are planning a trip down through Eastern Oregon, from Pendleton to Alvord Desert. I’m scouting out a bikepacking route for another time so we plan to ramble around a bit. We’ve been down through there before a few times but not with enough time to roam around. Looking for suggestions on routes and camp sites, things not to miss or to be sure to miss.

We have a total of ten days, but the first day is just getting down to Pendleton and the last day I plan to over night around Portland to see my daughter and her fiancé. So eight for rambling.

Thanks in advance.

Well, 70 miles East from Pendleton and you would be at my front door... I would check US 395 from Pendleton to Mt. Vernon. Lots of places to explore in that area, or come a little further East and take OR 244 through the Grand Ronde River canyons to Ukiah to merge into the 395. OR 244 is famous for its bicycle tours.
Another great resource for Biking in Southeastern Washington, Southern Idaho, and all of Eastern Oregon is Mountain Works a premier mountain bike and ski shop located in La Grande, Oregon. Call Mavis and staff at 541-963-3220. She will talk your ear off on all the best places to see. Tell her Mike Rose sent ya and she will really open up. (I am not affiliated with Mountain Bike Works or any of their products other than being a life long friend of Mavis.)
