My wife and I are going to do a 5-8 day trip to Colorado in two weeks and will be in the Ouray area as a destination traveling from Phoenix. Looking for input on camp spots and cool small towns that shouldn’t be missed. Also would like to get some fishing in ideas?

Ouray is a great place to check out. If you feel like getting a room, the Box Canyon Lodge is right next to the canyon and has its own hot spring out back. Check out Orvis for the clothing optional springs.. Telluride is right near by as well. Dont know much about the camp situation these days though. If you head about an hour north you can fish the Black Canyon area of the Gunnison.

Are you looking to base camp or will you move as you traverse the trails?

Assuming base camp, I'll suggest the area around Ironton. There are lots of sites along CR 20 & 200. We were there less than two weeks ago and had some interesting visitors.

Be sure to spend some time in Silverton and the Animas Forks ghost town. A good trip from Ironton is to take Corkscrew Gulch to Hurricane Pass to California Gulch to Animas Forks to Silverton and back to Ironton. Let me know if you'd like more info. You'll also be in a good position to make a loop with Imogene and either Black Bear or Ophir via Telluride. Take the free gondola ride to Mountain Village while you're there.

You'd also be close to Yankee Girl Mine which you can access via CR31 just SW of Ironton.

Looking to move each day so we can explore as much as possible
Do you have a route planned?

I can suggest campsites on Imogene, Corkscrew, Engineer, Stony and Last Dollar off the top of my head.

Especially if you have females along, check out Mousies Coffee/Chocolatier in Ouray. They roast their own coffee daily and they make some of the finest chocolates anywhere. Get a "Scrap" cookie while there. They are huge and contain all the variations of chocolate scraps they had left over. Remember to take an extra shot of insulin. This place will earn serious brownie points with your significant other. We get the cookies and fudge for a quick trail lunch.

There used to be a good Mexican restaurant just across the street. It has been a couple of years so I can't guarantee it is still there. There is a great Mexican restaurant in Silverton on the NW side of the street. Can't remember the name but it is home cooking.

Often overlooked is Stony Pass. Roughly 27 camping areas over 40 miles and far less traveled than the Alpine loop areas. Creeks on both sides of the pass and a lake on the west side. Pass is at 12,592'. This is roughly between Lake City and Creede.

One of my favorites! Camped on it several times...
