Late August took a drive down Coalinga Rd and looped back on HWY198. Campground is abandoned, the water system was vandalized at some point and not repaired. There is no off road trails, all is closed off. If you care to camp in a post apocalyptic scene, and hike or mountain bike in, there might be total isolation from the rest of humanity. It was completely deserted even on deer season opening weekend. I would strongly recommend checking it out in springtime when it is cool, green, and no fire restrictions active. Otherwise I just noted it as a one night boondocking option when passing through. I'm not sure if trust leaving a car unattended overnight either, if you wanted to pack in for the night I would reconsider.
