Hello,

Honestly, there is not too much in the Bangor area as far as Overlanding. We haven't been to many restaurants in Bangor. The Blaze, Timbercraft Kitchen is good. A new Bbq place in town does ax-throwing; everyone we know had a great time.

If you head out a little past Old Town, a 55 mile stretch of a logging road will bring you out near Calais on the coast. There are some pullouts for camping and great fishing.

From Calias you could head to Lubec and camp at Quoddy Head State Park; it's a real nice place. From there, you could continue south on US-1 to Ellsworth.

Before getting to Ellsworth, all the sleepy fishing towns are worth checking out along the way. Particularly Winter Harbor and Corea on the Schoodic Peninsula. We sold our home in Corea two years ago to full-time travel. Acadia National park on the Schoodic side is a must-see; it's an exceptional place. It's also worth a stop for lunch or dinner at the Pickled Wrinkle, a local eatery and pub.

Most of the restaurants in Bar Harbor are closed; food is expensive and not that great anyway. Ellsworth is your best bet:
Dragonfire for pizza
Many's Greek Grill
Prrovendar is supposed to be really good and Serendib, an Indian restaurant.

Everywhere is mostly pet friendly especially MDI.

Have a great trip, Happy Holidays

Thank you so much for all the information. Really appreciate you taking the time. We’re not camping we’re staying in Orono but will be exploring all weekend. Are all of the routes you mentioned paved? Notice there is supposed to be some weather there this weekend so don’t want to venture out alone in areas that we’re not familiar with. Was hoping to find others in the area to maybe do a little group drive.

Glad to pass on any information! All routes are paved except Stud mill Road, the logging road. If you take Stud mill road, just be prepared for washboard roads and logging trucks to zip on by quickly; give them their space. Kanu in Old Town is a good restaurant, offering brunch on weekends.

Honestly, we love Maine for the coast; it’s where we spend our time while there. Our opinion is jaded, having lived on the Maine coast, bush Alaska, and traveled the country. Our oldest two are in college at UMaine; we got them an apartment that we also use as a home base when we’re not on the road. Interior Maine is beautiful but not very accessible to explore how we like, primarily private property, etc. We spend a lot of our time on MDI, Schoodic, and driving down US-1 exploring the different seaside towns when there. We would definitely recommend sticking to exploring coastal Maine for a quick weekend trip.

Not sure of any Overlanding type groups in the area. We set out on the road a few weeks ago to chase warmer weather; otherwise, we’d offer to show you around.

We drove up this morning. We cut over to Rt 1 in Brunswick and did lunch and antiques along the way. Muddy Rudder was lunch, excellent food and then on north. We switched hotels and are actually staying in Bar Harbor and had dinner at The Blaze..again really good food thank you for the recommendation. We we’re trying to find the the logging road on a map that you mentioned is just past Old Town but we’re not able to locate it. Unfortunately Cadillac Mt is closed to drive to the summit and we hear some of the loop is closed but I’m sure there is still plenty of exploring to do!
