We have been to this area a few times. Mainly because it is very beautiful with the overlooks and the lake, it has a couple river crossings (haven't been able to make it through quite yet...hoping for some time this summer) and a steep hill climb (which we had not yet attempted). I had looked on the map the last time we were at Cove Creek Lake and saw on the other side of the dam crossing that there was a steep climb and by looking at the gaia gps maps it looked like it headed back toward FR249 that went back to the highway. Due to the incline and the size of the rocks on this climb I had decided a couple times before not to attempt this by myself. This time I had @Zheking and another guy from Natural State Overland with me to make sure we made it all just fine.

We entered through the entrance of the lake, FR307 and first went to the river crossing to see if there was any way we could get over to the other side. NO bueno. River was way too high. So we decided to ascend up the cliffside road and see the sights of the river overlook. Very beautiful.

Then to the lake and over the dam we went. We talked about it and debated about how steep it was. Then proceeded. It was great. My wife who was filming in the woods saw me. I told her that I couldn't see past my hood. She guided me and the rest while we ascended the mountain. It was only about 75 yards of climb and then it leveled out to something more level. It is a great loop that holds many different levels of skill. A great time was had by all. Oh and a lot of stress sweat. lol
