So I took the plunge and got Gaia on my phone. Looks like it does everything I want and more. So now I have a question though. What is a good quality external GPS antenna that is Android compatible? Reason I'm asking is because my phone, the Galaxy A20, is apparently known for iffy GPS performance. So before I rely on it for navigation I figure a quality antenna is in order.

Phones that I am aware of do not have a connector for an external GPS antenna; if your phone does you should find out if it supports an "active" antenna rather than a "passive" antenna. Active antennas, and their required support circuitry, will give a better experience typically. Here is an interesting looking article on improving Android GPS performance. All of that said I have _never_ seen a phone with an external GPS antenna connector. Good luck!

There are a couple of Bluetooth antennas. The Garmin Glo and Dual are two.

Wrong terminology. They are not antennas. They are GPS devices. In the old days of GPS there use to be external GPS antennas available. I haven't seen any in a long time and nothing that would connect to a phone.

For the original poster I would try your phone first and see what happens. If you have issue you could get a GPS Puck like that Glo or Dual as mentioned. You will just want to disable the internal GPS on your phone though. In iOS Gaia is supposed to go with the stronger signal that it picks up. Meaning if I have a Bluetooth GPS paired with the phone and that signal is better then the app will ignore the phones internal GPS. I am not sure if the Android version does the same thing as that would be some core functionality of the Android operating system.

I bought a cheap eBay gps receiver for my previous tablet and it worked great.
Model? Link? The GPS chip in my budget tablet is S L O W. Would like to find an option without spending a sizeable chunk of my paycheck.

I use a Garmin GLO 2, but I use it with an iPhone or iPad. It connects via Bluetooth and has worked well with GAIA. About 100 bucks if I remember correctly.

It's called the bluetooth datalogger 65c. You can find images of it on the net but I cannot find the eBay link I bought it from. I paid 23 bucks for it a few years ago.

Works great.
