hello there overland bound people,

I've got lately a 1999 Toyota land cruiser and got it first to a local specialist garage to get it fully inspected,

it's at 208k miles right now and seems like the *timing belt has never been replaced.

so I have ordered the Aisin timing belt kit, but I know a few items are missing like the thermostat and 2 other parts.

plus I wanted to ask if already we will be reaching "deep" what else would you recommend to replace.

oh yes and I do need to replace the **T of the heater.

would you recommend OEM or the metal version aftermarket would be better?

what about the ***rack and pinion I would love to get any recommendations if the re-build ones are any good? is it better to a brand new one OEM ? or is there something better ? or the rebuilt kit for it is good and not too complicated for a mechanic to re-build it with that kit?

sorry to be over the place sometimes the none official ADHD is kicking in so... ill make some order.

*timing belt kit :
is this the full list of ALL the items that need to be replaced?

1X Water Pump
1XTiming Belt
1XIdler Roller
1XTensioner Roller
1XFront Crankshaft Seal
2XFront Camshaft Seals
1XThermostat
1xHydraulic Tensioner
1XSerpentine Drive Belt

**T of the heater: is the metallic version the T connector or the metallic/aluminum version?

***Rack and pinion:
new OEM
rebuild OEM
DIY rebuild kit
aftermarket?

The Aisin timing belt kit is pretty complete. In addition to the thermostat, you will need the gasket that goes around the thermostat. You will also need some FIPG. The Toyota 1282B stuff is very expensive for what it is, so I used Permatex 51813 Anaerobic Gasket Maker and let it sit overnight before I filled with coolant. I would also suggest replacing the fan bracket while in there. I left the cam seals since it was suggested [by a well known Toyota parts guru] to leave them if not oily or weeping. I last did the T-belt on my '99 at 314k miles and the cam seals were dry. You will need a harmonic balancer holding tool and a puller to get the balancer off. I used this CTA tool to hold the balancer.

The heater tee choice is up to you. I replaced the tees with plastic OEM tees and plan to do that as part of every timing belt service (about every 100k miles). Some guys like the metal tee.

I installed a new OEM rack and pinion 105k miles ago. It has been flawless.
