    New member from PA

I'm in central PA. Few other overlanders in the area. Hit me up any time. I've been tapping the ADV-rider community for routes for a while now. Looking at going the Trans-PA-Trail here soon.

How much weight before trailer brakes are needed?

In my experience (and opinion), every off-road trailer should have brakes along with a good (adjustable) controller. They don't hurt on the road either.

Proof of Concept - Overland Trailer Build

Nice build. On a side note, when I build a new frame for my m101 I want to build the old frame into a flat-deck cargo trailer like this.

Looked at the maps more the other night. Looks like it does. For a long while the wilderness area boundary seems to parallel the road along the ridge. Then, for some reason the line just goes straight for a while and, at least according to the 2016 USFS map I was looking at, FSR 203 does cut...

Not sure about that. No, that section was after the above photo. The washout was technically impassible, but there was a bypass that wasn't too bad. Not sure if the bypass would last another heavy rain though. I'm not sure I'd want to attempt it with a stock 4wd. On 33's with a front...

Uh, nope. We took FSR 203 all the way. Explains why it was so "technical." I thought I had an updated GPX file for the AZBDR, but I guess not. The only signs we saw were ones that said, "road may be impassible, 4wd required." In all honesty it wasn't all that bad. All the washouts from the...

Region East - June 12 Update

When you come through south central PA, hit me up.

Did one overnight. Wasn't part of the plan, but it was a good thing we stopped when we did or we would have hit the technical sections in low/no light. Other than an invasion by some wild hogs, the site was awesome. So quiet and so dark. The hogs just had us on edge all night so we really...

Yeah, it got really close on that one. Didn't scrape. On the next few washes it did scrape a little. It's a 5.25" drop hitch so once I move to an actual off-road coupler it should raise up even with the rear bumper more.

Maximum Articulation on the AZBDR (M101 + Jeep LJ)

After Overland Expo West this year I took a short detour to see a dentist (who turned out to be more or a dental monitor) in Phoenix. To get back on track I realized my route would overlap with a section of the Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route (Section 5 between Globe and Young to be exact)...

Same section, just a few more miles down the road. Got real intense for a few brief sections. Mostly washouts coming down off the higher ridge-line.

Took this along Section 5 of the Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route between Globe and Young.

My "Poor Man's Teardrop" off-road camping trailer (M101 based)

The new bedframe has storage cubbies. I will probably add sliders to the rear-facing cubby to turn it into a drawer for the kitchen stuff. Not practical to turn any of the other cubbies into slides.

    What is overlanding to you?

Personally I've given up trying to define what "overlanding" is as a verb. It's like trying to hold onto a fist full of sand. The more tightly you try to define it the more slips through your fingers. That's where the slant to elitism comes into play. Drawing lines in the sand as to what is...

    Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival 2017

Hoping to be an instructor again this year. Just haven't gotten confirmation from the organizer yet. Pretty sure I'll be there regardless.

    Bugs on the windscreen

Best pro-tip I have: Windex. Regular windshield washer fluid is nothing more than blue water. It has a mild detergent and an additive to keep it from freezing. Beyond that, it's water. As such it's pretty much useless on bug-guts. Windex has ammonia in it which is really good for dissolving...

My "Poor Man's Teardrop" off-road camping trailer (M101 based)

Exactly my thoughts. RTT's are out of the question for me for a number of reasons, plus I really wanted something I could sleep in. I saw a trailer very similar to this pop up for sale on ExPo a while and was like "NO WAY!" From then on the hamster wheel started turning. My too biggest...

    Curious why you say that.

My "Poor Man's Teardrop" off-road camping trailer (M101 based)

Background: Why a trailer? A few things contributed to my desire to have an enclosed off-road camping trailer. First, I was sick and tired of dealing with a tent. I found out the hard way I'm not as young as I once was (ow, my back), I waste a lot of time setting and packing up my tent...

Evolution of my 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Thanks. I really wanted to show the phases and how functional each phase was. There are a lot of great builds out there but not everyone can drop the money to build their dream rig overnight. When I do my classes on vehicle prep and construction I always stress having a plan and working...
