A couple of Campsite cooking Hacks

I like to use premixed spices/sauces/pastes for cooking. The Asian grocery is great for premixed Indian spice packets, various tins of curry paste (Thai is great), sauces in jars and tins etc. Saves bringing an entire spice rack and keeps boredom away. I also really like a nonstick wok or...

    Butane Stoves - Pros, Cons

We like butane both for overlanding and cooking on the boat. Asian grocery stores are a great reliable source of cheap butane. Look for H Mart groceries or similar. Butane is popular for hotpot and Korean BBQ.

    Stocking stuffers for Overlanders

Some great suggestions. I'd add: Battery powered jumper kit Rechargeable magnetic work lights

What is your favorite Go-To knife for overlanding.

My everyday is also a CRKT, the Squid. Small wide blade. Assisted open is really nice. I like to be able to open one handed especially when trying to reach inconvenient things or when you have something in your other hand. Small, easy to carry, stout. Replaced a paraframe folder.

    access ladder for suburban/tahoe?

Nice. That's the ladder every yacht broker has in the trunk. If you need to get into a boat laid up on the hard, this is the answer. No reason it shouldn't meet your needs perfectly.

    Overlanding Cigar Aficionados

I have had good luck with these: Easy to keep around the house, you don't get sad if you leave one at a friend's house, and nothing to keep track of when you are done with your smoke.

How much to spend on a Overlander?

Your question brought to mind a story I think about often. A bunch of years ago, my sister married a really great guy from Norway. He had some buddies who were in the wedding, who had never been to the States but were really into rock climbing, mountaineering, and Metallica. So these two...

    Clothing Storage

Could not agree more. The sea bag is a pain. We like these for durability, but also stow-ability when empty.

    My Trauma Kit

Really nice kit. Well thought out. Two little items that I've had save the day in my little kit have been VetBond and Clozex skin closures. They have been nice to have in those, "eh, should I go get a couple of stitches" situations that can ruin a trip.

    Clothing Storage

This is a problem we struggled with for years on our sailboat. The boat is only 26' long and doesn't really have clothing storage, so we each get one duffel that fits in the gear hammock in the v-berth. Sometimes we'll be gone for weeks or months, and that makes clothing a real challenge...

What are some options for good gas mileage in overlanding vehicles?

The compact SUV route is a pretty good one. I've been impressed how well our stock CRV with ATs does on forest service roads and other light offroading. It gets us to the places we like to camp and carries the things we need. If I leave the roof rack in the garage and pack a little carefully...

Seriously, let's talk about overlanding spices.

I love to cook all sort of cuisines and when I started camp cooking I found some good advice online and built a spice cupboard in a recipe box. I used alphabetically organized zip top bags for all the spices and filed them in the box like files in a file cabinet. It worked okay. The trouble...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

First trip of the year. Took the CRV and the port-a-cabin down to the river for a bit of fly fishing (no catchin').

Easy-setup tent and cot recommendations please?

Sort of. The cube is indeed a cube, it has a "roof" with a vent in the center under the canopy. You definitely need both the canopy and cube as the cube is just a nylon sack. The cube, canopy, and shelves run about 60lbs all in with steel pegs. We could save a few pounds by switching to...

Easy-setup tent and cot recommendations please?

We've been happy with our Camp Time Roll-A-Cots Roll-a-Cot ® They are quick drying in case you need to transport them on the roof during a rain. They also provide lots of storage underneath. We use them in an e-z UP shelter with camping cube. It is a pretty comfortable set-up that feels...

    Jackery vs Yeti

I run a Bluetti EB240. Has been great running the fridge for up to a week. Solar integration is really easy with built in MPPT charger. The 110 outlets happily charge laptops etc. A little slow to charge on shore power, but huge capacity for the money. I think some of their newer units are...

How do you transport your fishing rod?

I fish out of a CRV and mostly fly fish so this has been a bit of a challenge for me. I've gone to exclusively four-piece rods both fly and spinning which I transport in a case like this: When I'm at my destination and moving from spot to spot I use a DIY set of suction cup racks that I put...

    Wisdom from the River

I think TBNation sells them for $1300 or so. As they say, it only hurts once.

    Wisdom from the River

I've been really happy with it. I've always had gas outboards. Fuel quality in my area is bad. The carbs are a pain. The electric is just a pleasure to use. Quiet, doesn't stink, and quick enough for my needs. It also means I don't need a separate trolling motor which is something I hadn't...
