Just bc you saw a prius in a place it shouldn't be, doesn't mean the op should also go there with his crv. Regular street and highway tires are not meant to be used on the roads to teakettle junction or racetrack. I think it's bad advice to recommend anyone drive those roads with street tires...
CRV? don't take that off pavement in DV unless you are running a true off road tire. 4wd in most areas of DV isn't critical, but in my opinion, a good quality off road tire is a necessity.
All depends where you go.
Don't go where 4wd is needed and you won't need 4wd.
Fairly simple concept.
You are concerned that it weighs 8900 lbs. Is that overloaded? If not what is the concern?
I'm confused. You say, "essentially camp anywhere...". Then you say yellow post only.
Which is it, anywhere or yellow post?
What exactly is a yellow post site (maybe why I'm confused)?
You can't really get lost at Pismo. It's very small. If you lose your way simply drive in one direction if you hit a fence go the other direction.
At night with heavy fog it can be a challenge sometimes.
I recommend you just start driving around. You will quickly figure out what you are...
Try 15 and go from there. You can experiment with going lower. If you don't get stuck then stick with 15.
Tow straps and ropes much better than a winch usually at Pismo. In 30+ years of going to Pismo I've only used a winch twice, but used tow straps countless times. Winches were used to...
Did you guys have jack stands?
Fortunate they had a matching rear end in stock.
Makes for an excellent campfire story for many years to come. Glad it all worked out. Quite the adventure to say the least.
Air down, air down, air down. It makes a huge difference. 10 - 12 psi without beadlocks. Many ppl go to 25 and think they are aired down. Experiment at different air pressures. After experimenting at the higher pressures, that most ppl consider aired down, go down to 10.
Bring a tool to...

One of the big drawbacks of dispersed camping in dv is no campfires. That said, it's not uncommon for ppl to have campfires in remote areas. I'm not suggesting it, but I have seen it.
Here's a great trip report that's worth reading...
I would start by searching the forum. There is a ton of info about death valley.
What kind of vehicle are you in?
What is your experience level?
Are you traveling solo?
Why not?
Because I'm an American and the official position of the Iranian government is "death to America".
I'm sure the people are very nice. However, the government doesn't like me.
