    Subaru Crosstrek

I roll in an Outback. I assume the cross trek is similarly setup. I have my Kenwood D710g mounted under the driver’s seat with the head unit attached to a Ram Mounts seat post mount (mounts to the passenger seat front left mounting bolt). I could take some photos if that would help.

Looking for an elastic strap for ham mic

If you’re dead set on a retractable mic then a truck stop is the way to go. This big name ones like Loves and Flying J always have them. I use the magnet method though and am quite happy with it. I use the Nite Ize (sp?) brand ones made for cell phones and they work well.

GMRS: "not impressed" or "we musta been doing something wrong"

I typically get about a 12-14 miles on 2m simplex from my mobile in the flat conditions of my AO. You can get much further from mountain to mountain. My mobile runs 50 watts. Gary

GMRS: "not impressed" or "we musta been doing something wrong"

I've gotten 2-3 miles in open country using GMRS handhelds in vehicles on a road trip. I don't use the bubble pack radios though. Instead I get commercial Part 90 type radios, program them for GMRS, and use GMRS specific antennas. By contrast, I usually get about a dozen miles on 2m simplex (vhf...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

We had a big snowfall here in Eastern Nebraska, around 12". Starting this year we've decided we'd get donuts anytime we have a snow day so I took the Subaru out on a donut run. Not as good as hitting the trail but every little adventure counts.

What knives do you guys recommend?

I get the joke but there are actually a lot of expensive knives I don’t care for. Overly tactical blades with thick grinds are a pet peeve. When I want a knife I want something that cuts and when I want a pry bar I can definitely do better than a pocket knife. I’ve learned that geometry is...

What knives do you guys recommend?

I used to lose knives occasionally but I started taking the clips off and bending them a little more to add tension. When there is enough tension the pocket clip will make a positive “snick” as it slaps the scale when drawn. I started doing this over 15 years ago and haven’t lost one since. I...

What knives do you guys recommend?

That Marbles is fantastic. I’m always on the hunt for a Marbles Ideal in good shape. Definitely hard to find!

What knives do you guys recommend?

For a fixed blade you are on the right track with the ESEE. They are well made, have good ergonomics, and are a great value. For a step up in materials take a look at Bradford knives. I’m fond of the Bradford 4.5 & 5.5 as well as the ESEE line in a similar size. Lastly, I’d recommend taking a...

    Cot Recommendation?

Thanks for all who replied with your recommendations. I live near a Cabelas so I got one of their big outdoorsman cots to try out. It is large and heavy but very comfortable. I set it up in the basement and slept on it the last two nights. Most importantly, my wife gave it tentative approval...

    Cot Recommendation?

I have a USGI cot and like it for the durability but the fabric is so tight it is impossible to properly assemble by hand. I’d like to find a similarly rugged cot that packs well for the road. When I read reviews of commercially made cots most complain of shoddy materials, stitching, etc. Is...

    Subaru Owners Registry

I have a 2017 Outback and Subaru extended the warranty on the transmission to 100k miles. Not sure what years they offered this on or if it is transferable but it might be something to look into.

2019 Toyota Tacoma Build - Overlanding, Daily Driving and Emergency Preparedness

I like the way you are starting out by systematically listing your requirements as opposed to just bolting on stuff. Mission drives the gear. I have a similar set of requirements at this point so I’ll be curious to see how this plays out for you. One thing you might consider that wasn’t...

    GMRS questions

The Midland products have been popular recently. I definitely think they nailed the form factor. My one beef with them is that they are using narrowband on all channels. Not all GMRS channels require narrow banding and this could could interoperability problems with other radios. If everyone you...

    A Method for Temporary Installs

I like that seat organizer. Could you hang it on the back of the seat and reclaim the seat for a passenger? I also concur that the ammo can center console is a sweet setup.

    A Method for Temporary Installs

Yeah, not everyone will be interested in so many radios. The project started out as a flexible way to experiment with different radios, not for adventure travel specifically. I used it successfully last weekend and made a number of contacts while on the highway so I think it will be staying for...

    A Method for Temporary Installs

Greetings, My vehicle is both my daily driver and adventure vehicle, at least for now. In the long run, I'm looking forward to a body on frame truck or SUV so don't want to damage the resale value of my Subaru by drilling holes in the interior fixtures to mount radios. So I came up with a...

North East WA loggers, 2M frequencies

What makes you think it is hams? Anything is possible but hams take a lot of pride in good radio etiquette and never miss a chance to use their callsigns. Unfortunately, the GMRS license give additional privileges like higher power and repeater use but shares channels with FRS. I’m licensed for...

    OB Members Nebraska

Hi, I'm Gary and live in Papillion, NE. I'm Air Force so not from the local area but would really enjoy getting out with folks who know where to go to get outdoors around here. I'm rocking a Subaru Outback so not ready to hit any rock crawling but it gets around most other places OK. I do...

    CB Radio questions

I recently purchased a Wilson Lil Wil. The short answer is that it wasn’t too expensive, is reasonably small for a CB antenna, and tuned up easily. I’ve made several contacts with truckers around my area and get good voice reports. There is a lot of RFI in my local area. Sometimes as I’m...
