Yup that was one of the major reasons why I think I am going that route. And the price, the Gazelle tent is so much more affordable compared to a RTT. Instead of spending $1500 on just the tent I am going to use the rest of the money I saved for other gear.
Yeah I figured it would be fine, however the more I thought about it I think I decided against a RTT and I am just going to pick up a Gazelle Tent. Thanks for your input though I will probably be adding a basket or some kind of rack system to my roof so your advice will not go unused.
Those of you who have roof top tents on their Subaru Outbacks! I am going to be buying one very soon for my 2010 Outback however I wanted to hear your thoughts on the how to mount it to the roof. I have heard of a few people using the standard rails/crossbars but from what I can tell almost...
@Dana L and @Charles M both great points about HAM! I am planning on upgrading to a true mobile radio rig with a better antenna and not relying on a hf unit. Also the area I am located in a mostly go overlanding in (Northern IL and Southern WI) has pretty good overall cell service and where...
Yeah that's probably a better idea! You should definitely share those maps when you get them done! I look forward to taking a look and possibly taking the routes you find.
As your first Overland/Offroad video not bad at all! Interested to see what the rest of the trails look like! It's hard finding trails like that around here in Northern IL so I might have to head down there for a weekend next summer.
Yeah I have seen those nuvi's going for that much too but I am probably going to get a slightly newer one like you said for around $50. So many options just scrolling through eBay as well.
This is actually super helpful! I am looking at getting a dedicated GPS device and considered Garmin but since most of them didn't have off-road or topo maps they didn't seem that worth it. Now seeing that you can use the Garmin Basecamp to plan these trips out and get topo maps is super...
Yeah that makes sense! Time to go spend at least $700 on tires! Jokes aside, I will probably be getting new tires before winter hits or just after. My current ones are still in good shape so I can't justify new ones just yet.
That's good to hear! I've heard of people having issues on other All-Terrain tires not necessarily the KO2s but I figured they should hold up with rain and snow with a Subaru. It's probably a combination of the tires and larger truck that causes issues in snow for others.
How do the BFG All-Terrain KO2's handle on the road with rain and snow? I have been looking at getting some but worried I'll lose too much traction in those conditions!
@systemdelete @1Louder @Graeman All great information on the limitations of both Gaia and handheld devices! I knew Gaia didn't do turn by turn stuff but I didn't realize the Garmin handhelds were as capable as that. Honestly I think either will work for me because usually when I just use Google...
Most Subaru bumper deletes don't look that great and just look like the car is missing a bumper. However this rig looks amazing without the stock bumpers! Job well done and I'm sure you're loving that extra bit of approach angle you got!
Yeah I figured an older used Inreach won't be that much but they are really for navigation which is why the Garmin Overlander would be the perfect companion for it! And I have the BaoFeng UV-5R 2nd gen just because it was
$23 so when I get my license I'll either get the BF-F8HP or a proper...
Yeah from what I have heard the test isn't that bad at all! I was also considering doing one of those "cram" classes, where an instructor teaches you the stuff you need to know to pass the test then directly after you take the test. Just need to find one near me.
I am also considering some...
Yes! I have started to consider this and have started getting into HAM radio. I picked up a cheap Baofeng to mess around with. Still unlicensed but I'll probably be doing that this winter. Just trying to make sure that is the right option for me. From what I can tell it seems to be viable in the...
That's what I thought but I have never used a cell enabled iPad. I'll have to keep my eye out for a used one on eBay and stuff. It's ridiculous how much more Apple charges for the cell enabled ones compared to the wifi only models!
@madcratebuilder @AdamFineFJ
I did not even think of using an old phone! That's not a bad idea I have an old Nexus 5x laying around that I forgot about! It will probably run better than my Fire tablet and that way I don't need to rely on my phones hotspot for GPS. Thanks for the idea!
