idea for getting unstuck. is this feasible? is it new?

+1 on the maxtrax. I feel like they can get you out of most situations. For the cost they are usually cheaper than a winch alone. Especially cheaper than a winch and bumper setup.

    The great Winch Debate

I also went with a comeup 9500. I have used it a handful of times and really like it. After doing a bunch of research they seem like a really good, quality alternative to any of the bigger names out there. http://www.comeupwinch.com/pro/detail.php?pid=298&cid=112&f=102#.Wd40PxOPLMU

Off-Road Lighting... What do you run? Why?

Like @ExploreDesert said, the Baja Designs are amazing. I have the "combo" squadron pro and I used them out in the desert over the holiday. Amazing lighting. I felt like I didn't even need the headlights at all. Once you can really see what's going on around you it's much easier to navigate at...

HAM Radio Call Sign Check-In Thread

That would be pretty cool! So far I only have a UHV/VHF setup in the 4Runner, and mostly for trail rides. But now that I have my call sign I'm looking forward to some CQ tests on the road.

    Water Storage (Merged Thread)

+1 on the Scepter Water cans. I have a bunch of them and they are amazing. Hold up to a lot of abuse and don't leave any funny after taste.

Off-Road Lighting... What do you run? Why?

I have been running the Baja Designs Squadron Pro Combo lights because that was the option that Shrockworks gave me when I bought my bumper. That said, I have been extremely happy with them. I would buy more of their lights and it appears that they have quite a good reputation for quality. I'm...

The Quest for the Best Knife.

I love my Benchmade Bushcrafter. I always have it with me when I am camping, wheeling, etc. . . It can handle a variety of tasks with ease and it came with a leather sheath which was a great bonus. Sheath also has a spot for a firesteel if you're into that sort of thing. I have used it for...

    Camp Lanterns

I have a couple of the Goal Zero Lighthouse Mini lanterns. I dig that they are LED, rechargeable, dimmable, and have a magnet on the base. I have stuck them to the side of the truck a few times for when I need some light. http://www.goalzero.com/p/333/lighthouse-mini-lantern

    Trans-America Trail... Anyone?

I want to do this route so badly. I have been talking to a few folks about setting it up, but it does seem like the lead time is a few months of planning. I checked out the site briefly once before and from what I remember the trail was developed for bikes, but there had been some Jeeps that...

what form of gps do you use?

I use a Garmin Montana 680 that was a recent upgrade from a Garmin Oregon. I like being able to add different topo maps that I may need, plotting a course from my computer and then uploading it to the GPS, and adding waypoints on the fly. I also like how if I want to get out of the truck and...

HAM Radio Call Sign Check-In Thread

Passed my technician test on 12.2 and just got my call sign KM6WMQ assigned yesterday. Applied last night for a vanity call sign, keeping my fingers crossed. . .

    Gobi Shipping Times

I also ordered through Trail Duty and was quoted the same shipping time. I believe that in the end it was delivered week 8 or 9. I was chomping at the bit by the time it finally arrived. I think that I maybe had an anomaly experience with customer service. I called Gobi direct and had somebody...

    Portland Area Trail Rides

Thanks for that last bit of intel. I head out tomorrow morning. That's crazy that the permits cost so much. But on the plus side they are funding the areas that we want to be in. I'm happy to pay for these areas to be maintained and still available. Thanks again!

    Portland Area Trail Rides

@Snowtrout Thanks for the GPX files. I was able to open them in Basecamp. That'll be helpful for sure. I already ordered an Oregon OHV permit and have it on my truck. Thanks for the tip though. In CA there's no permit requirement to explore BLM and/ or State lands so that's a new thing for me...

    Portland Area Trail Rides

Thanks @BillyBadly I appreciate all the info. I have sen photos of the Goonie house all tarped over. It's really sad on both fronts, that people abused the privilege, and that it's not a welcoming spot anymore. Either way, I am just interested in seeing Astoria and doing some exploring. I'll...

    Portland Area Trail Rides

Hello friends, I have a job coming up mid Dec. and I will be in Portland for a few days. I am driving my 4Runner up there from Oakland and I have dedicated a day to going out and adventuring. I have the Oregon OHV guide and I am trying to figure out what to do. -I will pass by Timber Mountain...
