Well if you want to buy Warn ( a good idea ) look around; the WARN 96800 VR8 Series 8,000lb. Gen II Winch is $499.00 with steel cable ( the "S" with Synthetic Rope is about $150.00 more ) still not bad for ( arguably ) the best of the best

You may want to check out Quadratec they have their own brand 9500 lb with Synthetic Rope for $499.00 or a 9000 lb for $449.00. Quadratec has a very good reputation and stands behind the stuff they sell, just my $.02

One of the things that needs to be considered....is if you slide off a obstacle and "come down hard" on a rock will the skid plate prevent damage........aluminum may not. If you are in the middle of "no and where" the extra weight will not matter if you break something you can not fix.
