    Bear proofing?

This is exactly why I do not have a refrigerator and stove in the car and why in the rig of my dreams I’d never have them. An old First Lander aphorism goes like this: When a twig snaps in the forest, the eagle will see it, the deer will hear it, and the bear will smell it. And all those...

Show me a Road Sign.....really any sign...

I should mention that this is California State Route 178. Looking north in the background are the Panamint Mountains, behind which is Death Valley , and directly behind me is Searles Valley, where they just had that cluster of earthquakes in Ridgecrest and Trona.

    Another Subaru Build Thread

Terry, that's a hell of a build. I am about to put my Gen 5 3.6 Outback through such a custom build. And perhaps because of that, might I ask some questions? 1. How much weight was added to the vehicle? I am asking because I am not sure whether the weight of the bumpers will mean a lift via...

    Nature Photos

Ridiculous how good these iPhones have gotten. Their sensors are too small, their post-processing is limited, and they do JPEG only, but they are always on your body and their output is pretty good! These are all iPhone B&Ws. The 'good' ones are still in my X-T3 and awaiting...

    Let them eat SPAM!

If Andrew Steyn ever made that for Kate Thompson out in the bush, you know he wouldn't have had to work so hard to get her attention.

    Let them eat SPAM!

Well now — my handle on Overland Bound ain’t Musubie for nothing, you know ....

    Mountain biking

On the other hand, you do have rear suspension on this thing. I remember Tom Ritchey's aphorism: "Suspend the rider, not the bike!" Thomas Frischknecht won a bunch of World Cup races and championships on a FlexStem in the 90s. But I do like your build. Fixies are great. And looking at today's...

    Coffee Set Ups

I bring a medium sized Bialetti Moka Express (https://bialetti.com/coffee/stovetop/moka-express-c-1_7_22.html) when I go out. Easy to use, easy to clean, and there are only 3 parts, all of them metal and none of them breakable. Also makes a good strong cuppa or 3.

    Mojave Road

Mojave National Preserve is one of my favorite desert places. I like it much better than Joshua Tree. The roads are marked on the Casebier book of course, but do check out the excellent desertusa.com site as well. Here's a particularly useful page...

Rivian Will Bring Electric to Off-Road

No offense taken, but a hybrid would be great as an overlander. Jeep's new 48v architecture in their 2.0 turbo 4 Rubicon is starting to make inroads as a very mild hybrid. To really make a difference, they're going to have to start looking at different hybrid architecture. The Prius-style...

    Subaru Owners Registry

Yeah, that monogranitic soil is pretty identifiable. Love JT, too.

Where's that pic taken? Joshua Tree NP?

    Mountain biking

I like picking and putting on the parts on myself as well. You get a bespoke bike that is perfect for you and one that no one probably has. I have actually started to update my Yeti Ultimate. Still 26" of course, and for now I'll stick with the rigid fork and naturally the Magura HS-33 brakes...

    Subaru Owners Registry

FozRoamer, Nice purchase. If Chevy made an SUV out of the ZR2 platform I'd buy that in a heartbeat. If only the new Blazer were exactly that. But no, it's a glorified Traverse . . . But I digress. I'm in CA as well and I'm wondering if you've got plans for the Duramax. Any deletes in the...

    Compromise

I'm with you on the different-vehicle-different-application rationale. My DD is not the Subaru--it is a VW e-Golf, which is almost a perfect city car (and yes, alas, I do have to live in the city). The Subaru gets taken out only once in a while, but when it does, it racks up 500-2,000 miles per...
