Just catching up with this thread while contemplating the 2wd/AWD/4wd scenarios and ended up with the following output.
Understand the limitations of both yours and the vehicles capabilities, balance those with the conditions.
Personal view is capable 2wd pilot can traverse a trail far more...
Honestly, I personally never found it was as bad as some people would like to have you believe(5000 miles in 3 weeks in a old ex MoD 110 with the 2.5 NAD red block engine, 2 issues, oil pressure switch failed, and front damper & bush(that was my fault after section of corrugation not checking...
Always partial to the P38, used to work for a company that overhauled the ex Land Rover Experience vehicles before they entered the dealer network. A good one is a stunning vehicle, but the BECMs could be painful in bad ones(steam cleaning interiors accounted for a few I recall!).
Good luck with...
Fake is a strong word, I drove 5000 miles from the UK to the Gambia and only a relatively small portion of that would meet your definition above, but as it was vehicle dependent and across land I'd certainly judge it overlanding?
Certainly overlanding is more likely to involve the road less...
Finally got round to watching this build, hugely impressive system and quality build definitely inspirational although i might look towards a single ring cooker/sink combo like the Smev 8521(am in Europe so readily available). Have got the twin system in my Ducato van though.
Really nice practical/versatile XC70. Am continually tempted by these myself(run a 2009 V70 2.5T currently) before throwing cash into a 'big' rig.
Re the Haldex controller I believe one of the VW specialists have developed something for the 4Motion range, not sure whether it would be transferrable.
So in terms of the questions, time frame is 3 to 5 years, but want to do some short 'shakedown' trips first.
Vehicle Budget, well little as possible obviously, and my £12-15k including prep does exclude most "troopys" if you can see one in the UK.
Have posted a similar question elsewhere in the past, but interested in the view of Overland Bound members.
Looking to start building a rig with the capability to go RtW if i so desired. As a european, the obvious true 4wd options are all diesel powered in the main, unless i look at older...
Great piece, had reached a similar conclusion of late(although i am a homeowner not a renter). I too have far too much stuff, lots of useless or unused stuff. I'm gradually weening myself away from that situation, with the plan to build an overland rig alongside that. The view long term, if it...
Nice project, well executed. Keep looking at an earlier model Outlander for myself as an expedition/camping set up. Keep thinking full size just encourages me to carry too much(beyond option for fuel/water) and in reality how long would i truly end up "off grid". Light & agile is the future...
Mercedes make great car based overland vehicles, one of my inspirations was a guy who built a W123 wagon and took it across to Africa(Sierra Leone/Ghana)
Caught up with this last night whilst researching XC70 overland potential, and the path brought me here.
Love the project, looking at something similar but based on the D5, bit more practical here in Europe. Did contemplate something based around a 940 few years back, Dana rear axle with air...
Hi All & everyone,
So new member from the UK, specifically the North Lincolnshire region.
Previous overland experience involved taking a Land Rover 110 to Gambia in 2006/07 then kinda retired from the wheeled adventuring for a while.
Currently building a race van/motor home based on a Fiat...
