    There is so much area there. You can almost go to Oregon on back roads. Going to lake pillsbury as a starting point is a good start. Basically 101 noth to Ukiah. Fill up with fuel there.     Fallen trees on the trail

    get a good saw and learn to use it. Stil and Husquavara are you best options. The size depends on many variables. I have a Stil 440 magnum. It is generally bigger than you need but I used it for other things and lived in an area with huge trees.

    Norther California is a huge place. I grew up there. Where are you leaving from? Good places is lake Pillsbury area. void covelo, marijuana harvest time and problems there at best of times.

    I think you would be better off using light 38 loads so you can shoot accuratly. If you have not got a handgun yet the Taurus jusge with bird shot turky loads might be a good option.

    I did not read through the whole thread but one good option is a shotgun if you are worried about self defense against people or critters. There is not a whole lot that OO buck or a slug can not take care of at short range. The key with anything you get is to practice practice and practice.
