Sounds like you might be experiencing mask squeeze. The water pressure as you dive is compressing the air space inside your mask thus pushing the mask farther onto your face. You can equalize the mask by breathing slightly through your nose.

The Mountain bike route is called the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMR). You can find info and maps on the Adventure Cycling Association web site. There is also a race call the Tour Divide which is slightly different than the GDMR. I've ridden 1600 miles of it from Canada to Steam Boat...
